What's In Our tap Water - The Truth May Shock You!

By Garth W.

America has made some of the most progressive advances for regulation and setting guidelines for our drinking water purification and distribution systems, but it’s still not enough to keep us entirely safe. There is a growing concern over whether or not our tap water is safe to drink and in the United States there have been increasing disturbing cases reminding us that our system isn’t perfect. What’s in our tap water? Well that question is something many people are asking themselves now that recent reports of drug-laced and toxic city tap water have come out in the open.

Firstly, this question is nothing new. Since 2003 and even long before researchers have been trying to find out what compounds, minerals and leached toxins might be in our water making it unsafe for human consumption. The good news is that for the most part there are a lot of cities that are still within the safety guidelines and limits. In other words in some cities our tap water is considerably dirty and toxic, but just not dirty or toxic enough to go past the safety limits put in place by the government. Here is just a short list of some of the things that are currently being found in our water on a frighteningly consistent basis:

Pharmaceuticals
High levels of chlorine
Microorganisms (bacteria, parasites)
Metals
Toxic minerals
Radioactive material
Hormones
Sewage
Commercial chemicals

There’s no way to properly rank how terrible each item in the above list is, because they’re all equally undesirable to have in our tap water. However, two of the substances in particular (pharmaceuticals and hormones) have been held responsible for causing health and medical problems in certain areas of the country. Obviously if anyone has hormones or pharmaceutical remnants in their drinking water they run the risk of having adverse side effects. At an alarming rate this seems to be occurring in major cities and even in some suburban areas.

“Why are these things in our water?” is a question many people are asking. The fact of the matter is there are a lot of people responsible for the contamination of our drinking water supply. It stems from people not properly disposing of materials properly as well as the establishments responsible for purifying and cleaning our water. It’s no wonder that home installed water purifiers are so popular these days. We simply can’t rely on other people to make sure our drinking water is totally safe to drink or bathe in.

All it takes to contaminate our tap water is for an irresponsible pharmaceuticals company or average citizen to dispose of drugs in the wrong way. Once the contaminated water goes to the treatment facilities there’s no telling how well it will be purified out of the water, meaning we’re left almost entirely in the dark. The news isn’t all bad though. Many local water authorities are now offering quality reassurance and information on their websites discussing concerns like pharmaceuticals and other harmful substances that might find their way into your water.

Regardless of where you live it’s important to know how widespread this problem is so you can fully grasp the situation. For example, here’s a short list of the United States worst drinking water locations:

Pensacola, Florida.
Riverside, California.
Las Vegas, Nevada.
Riverside County, California.
Reno, Nevada.

As you can see this problem is literally spread across the entire United States and has been a growing problem for many cities and counties. The good news is that there is a lot you can do right at home to try to get safer drinking water. Since no one is going to be reliable when it comes to making sure your drinking water is completely safe it’s a good idea to be proactive when it comes to your drinking water. For example here are a few things you can do to make sure you’ve got the safest water possible.

Be proactive about where you live. Obviously if water supply is important enough to you and you live in an area where there is poor water, moving might be a good idea. Do research before moving and try to balance all local amenities and requirements to make sure you get clean water.

If moving simply isn’t an option or you do not plan on leaving your home anytime soon cleaning your water yourself is a good step to take. Using high quality home water purifiers that can clean out chemicals and other harmful substances from the tap water is a great way to keep your water supply safe for ingestion. There are a number of great high quality purifiers available.

Purchase large water bottles for consumption and cooking needs and use your tap water just for bathing. Some companies will deliver large water cooler size bottles to your home monthly and this can be a great way to be extremely safe with your water consumption. Since many of these water companies do their own purification to meet industry standards it’s some of the best water you can buy.

Since our bodies are up to 60% water and we use it daily in the food we eat and the things we drink, making sure it’s clean is very important. Due to so many harmful toxins and substances being found in our tap water supplies it’s clear we can no longer rely on the local water authorities to keep us safe. Pharmaceuticals will keep contaminating our water supply and harmful toxins will be something to be concerned about.

The good news is that we can actually do something about it like purchasing bottled water, moving to cleaner areas or using a home purifying system. Practically speaking purchasing a home water purification unit is the best way to do your purifying and water treatments at home to make sure you’re getting the cleanest water possible. Some people even go so far as to purchase in home osmosis water purification which ensures that absolutely nothing gets through.
